Robert Adam was the most skillful interpreter of the popular neoclassical style of architecture in England. With his brother James, a partner in Robert's firm, he published prints after their completed commissions. The resulting book was the highest-quality architectural publication of the 18th century, with large-format images of both interior and exterior plans and elevations, as well as details and furniture. This print shows a coffered ceiling inspired by ancient Roman architectural monuments. It has also subsequently been hand-colored in blue. — ("Eighteenth-Century Furniture Design," May 23, 2009—February 21, 2010, Indianapolis Museum of Art, Conant Galleries)
