Color PaletteSometimes the typical elegance and reserve of Sheraton furniture had to yield to absolute grandeur. This English state bed was meant to be ornate, luxurious, and impressive; and Sheraton admittedly spared no expense in material or decoration in order to design a piece of furniture "suitable to the dignity of a prince, and worthy [of] the notice of a king." This large plate was a fold-out in Sheraton's book, and 14 pages of text described both its manufacture and the extensive iconography of the various motifs representing government and virtues. — ("Eighteenth-Century Furniture Design," May 23, 2009—February 21, 2010, Indianapolis Museum of Art, Conant Galleries)
