- For this, the artist’s most celebrated work, Maufra told his printmaker he wanted to create the sensation of waves pounding the Breton coast. Indeed, his image immerses the viewer in a powerful, stormy sea.
- In the 1890s many progressive artists, often inspired by their enthusiasm for Japanese prints, attempted to depict the energy of the sea. In the white shape at left, Maufra even tries to capture the surf, frozen in air.
- Maufra painstakingly developed this etching, working the plate through eight stages, called “states.” In the later states he added the aquatint that gives the print its rich tonal effects.
