Color PaletteSiskin, like Henry Holmes Smith, taught at the Institute of Design (formerly the New Bauhaus), but not until 1951, after he had already begun exploring the abstractions presented by peeling paint, wall stains, and bits of graffiti. Divorced from their surroundings, their realities became unrecognizable, but as objects they were intriguing in their own right. [new para] Siskin’s explorations were related to those of his friends among the Abstract Expressionist painters, who were coming to prominence in the 1940s. He shared their opinion that a picture should not present an illusion of depth or space, but should exist on the flat plane of the picture’s surface.
