No other artist of the 20th century was a larger personality than Pablo Picasso, nor did he ever shy from being photographed by professionals, visitors and, in this case, his young French friend Lucien Clergue. Upon seeing Clergue’s first photographs in Arles in 1953, Picasso had been encouraging and welcomed Clergue’s friendship, which lasted 20 years, until the master’s death. [new para] Clergue caught Picasso holding his cigarette like his paint brush, casting a coincidental shadow on his other arm in the shape of a dove, one of Picasso’s favorite motifs in the 1950s.
