Callahan’s whimsical Weed Against Sky combined both his interest in nature photography, dating to an Ansel Adams workshop in Detroit in 1941, and in the modernist approach to photography preached by Laszlo Moholy-Nagy at Chicago’s Institute of Design (formerly the New Bauhaus), where Callahan began teaching in 1946.
