Color Palette• Some forty years separate the two portraits of Paul Signac exhibited here. When this likeness was made, Signac was an established artist rather than a bold young pioneer of the Neo-Impressionist movement.
• During the 1920s Signac was actively writing, organizing exhibitions, and sailing the coasts of France. He produced a few oil paintings each year, but worked primarily in watercolor.
• This image, an accurate likeness of Signac with his signature pointed beard, was one of a portfolio of ten etchings by his friend Roux-Champion depicting famous French painters of the 20th century.
