Dehner’s career blossomed after her separation in 1950 from her husband, the sculptor David Smith.
Like her ex-husband, Dehner did not consider her drawings, prints or sculptures to be subservient to one another. For her, a drawing was a potential sculpture; a sculpture was a solid drawing; and an etching was a combination of work on paper and in metal. She worked in all three media simultaneously.
