Color Palette(Sotheby's, New York, New York), 1987; purchased by Walter and Joan Wolf, Indianapolis, Indiana; given to the Indianapolis Museum of Art in 2008.
Callot returned from Italy in 1621 and to the patronage of the Duke of Lorraine. His series of seventeen etchings, The Miseries of War, was created in the same year that his hometown of Nancy was besieged and taken by Louis XIII of France, to which Callot was an eye witness.
Callot described his series as "the life of soldiers," and the scenes of brutality were universal enough for there to be no political danger in publishing them in Paris.
