紅白梅図
Deep crimson blossoms sprout from the broken branch of an aged tree and from a single offshoot. The trunk and branch are expertly executed in a technique called tarashikomi, in which ink is dripped onto pigments (or vice versa) before they have completely dried, creating pooled effects and soft, blurred outlines. The composition is enlivened by the energetically projecting shoots of a white plum.
Ōho was the adopted son, pupil, and successor of Sakai Hōitsu (1761–1828), a master of the painting school known as Rinpa.
