Capturing one of the last royal spectacles before the fall of the French monarchy in 1789, Moreau le Jeune minutely observed the throng of over 500 courtiers attending the coronation of Louis XVI in Reims cathedral on June 11, 1775.
This etching was among Moreau le Jeune's official duties as "Draftsman and Engraver to the King," a post to which he was appointed in 1770 at the age of 29.
This rare proof of the etched state preceded the strengthening of the lines with engraving before publication.
