Bernard’s images of everyday life in Pont-Aven reflect his keen sense of design. He positions the curving forms of the women and the diagonal tree trunk to create a lively, fluid pattern. Especially clever is the pairing on the right of the two women stretching in opposite directions. The sheets hanging on the line add rare right angles to the flowing lines of the composition.
Bernard was familiar with Japanese woodcuts, and the commanding figure at left was inspired by Japanese prints of actors.
The maple leaf at lower right is Bernard’s symbol for his signature.
