Color PalettePaul Klee greatly admired the tales of the German writer E. T. A. Hoffmann (1776-1822). This print appears to be loosely based on the author's story The Golden Pot (1814). It follows the student Anselmus as he attempts to enter the heaven of poetry. Anselmus hears mystical voices emerging from a tree, seen at the left in the lithograph. The vessel in the center may stand for the golden pot that gives the story its name.
This lithograph was issued by the Weimar Bauhaus School in 1921 as part of a set of 14 prints. Bauhaus print series were released to raise funds for the school, to give students experience with printmaking, and to illustrate the Bauhaus's artistic philosophies regarding integrating avant-garde design and industry.
