Color PaletteA series of 12 mezzotints that Turner seems to have made single-handedly in the mid-1820s are known as the Little Liber, associating them with Turner's major print cycle of the previous decade. Such a connection is unlikely. Turner never mentioned this work to anyone and it was unknown until the printing plates and a few proofs were found in his studio upon his death in 1851.
While scholars have suggested that Turner intended this series to explore moonlight under varying conditions, Turner's first eminent print collector, his stockbroker Charles Stokes, was probably accurate in describing this series as "effects"-general observations of atmospheric phenomena, or "prefaces"-beginnings of compositions.
