Color PaletteWhile the Liber Studiorm and the Little Liber are both series of mezzotints, they differ markedly in their respective attitudes toward subject. In the former, the places are very specific and fully described by etched outline before the mezzotint tones were added. In the latter, there are no outlines and Turner exclusively used the rich tonal potential of mezzotint to depict sharp contrasts between dark clouds and bursts of light.
The subject here is so vague that the plate has been variously called Gloucester Cathedral, Boston Stump and The Hare in reference to the animal in the foreground.
