親子猿図
Despite the use of a slight amount of pinkish pigment, this painting is remarkable for the manner in which the artist renders the furry bodies of these subjects with only minimal and judicious use of outlines.
Mori Sosen was best known for painting monkeys. He is said to have lived in the woods for a while just to observe them in their natural habitat. Here a youngster eagerly watches as an adult peels what might be a chestnut. Someone has tampered with the original signature on the right margin, and the “Sosen” characters do not match the rest of the inscription. The image, however, is delightful, and it was skillfully executed by someone close to the master, if not by Sosen himself.
