Color PaletteKnowing that more people would see his work through widely available engraved reproductions than through the unique originals, Turner gave great care to their production. He worked closely with his engravers, constantly correcting their work-in-progress by “touching” the proofs they sent him for his approval.
In this series of four “touched proofs,” Turner changes the sculpted figure at the foot of the stairs approaching the Villa Madama on the outskirts of Rome. He replaces the original sphinx with a lion and finally settles on a recumbent river god.
