Color PaletteIn his Cathedral Series of color lithographs made at Gemini G.E.L., Lichtenstein, in his own words, "vulgarized" Monet's classic Impressionist paintings of Rouen Cathedral. He replaced Monet's individualistic broken brushstrokes with a mechanical grid of benday dots common to photographic reproductions.
"They are different from Monet, but they do deal with the Impressionist cliché of not being able to read the image close-up-it becomes clearer as you move away from it."
-Roy Lichtenstein
