In the Box – Horizontal is the classic among Bernhard’s classically composed and exquisitely crafted paeans to the female nude. The photographer carefully posed her model like a sculpted sleeping Greek nymph in a cardboard packing box, which serves to frame, but not confine the figure.
"I met Ruth because I saw her photographs in a magazine of nudes. The bodies were beautifully ethereal. My husband had encouraged me to model, but I was uncomfortable. I thought that if I posed for Ruth it would be different." — Joyce Pieper, model for In the Box – Horizontal
