Ward's watercolor is a true facsimile in all its aspects of Turner's original, which was subsequently engraved by G.H. Phillips. Turner retained his watercolor. He left it and 20,000 other drawings and paintings as his bequest to the British nation in 1851.
The bequest was originally housed in London's National Gallery where selections were made available for copying by students, such as Ward.
