Color PaletteThe buds and blooms of the cherry tree mark the season as spring. The painting presents a study of contrasts—the fierce hawks, rugged pine, and even the claw-like ripples of the stream in the lower left, versus the supple sprouts and dainty wildflowers along the banks and the delicate petals of the blossoms that surround the raptors.
Shohaku had a reputation for creating powerful works with eccentric visual effects. On one occasion he even used a household broom to paint a huge portrait in ink of Bodhidharma, the father of Zen Buddhism. But he also made wonderfully elegant and detailed paintings. This work provides a good glimpse of the versatility of his vision and his handling of the brush.
