美人図
Seemingly lost in reverie, a woman sits with her arms tucked up inside her beautiful chrysanthemum-patterned robe. Her obi is decorated with a gold phoenix pattern on a deep blue ground. On a lacquer tray beside her are an incense burner, packets of incense, and metal chopsticks.
Paintings like this one, aimed at patrons from the lower classes of Japanese society, were the main products of Moronobu's studio. Some of his students were allowed to sign his name to their works. Moronobu also pioneered single-sheet woodblock prints, which could stand alone as artworks rather than simply as illustrations in printed books.
