Color PaletteDr. Steven Conant, Indianapolis, Indiana; given to the Indianapolis Museum of Art in 1999.
In 1940, Stanley William Hayter and many other artists of Atelier 17 fled the Nazi occupation of Paris and reestablished their studio in New York. Peterdi, having served in the US Army during the war, reconnected with Atelier 17 in 1947.
Peterdi’s first color prints were made in 1947 with the simple application of watercolor brushed onto the engravings through stencils. The Dreamy Lobster was published in a portfolio of prints issued by a new New York gallery, Laurels, which became a prime outlet for the artists of Atelier 17.
