Cameron was born to a wealthy East India merchant and took up photography for her amusement at the age of 48. She became known for her portraits of the great men of the Victorian age, with whom she was well acquainted.
The Rosebud Garden of Girls was taken in the garden of Cameron’s neighbor on the Isle of Wight, the poet Alfred Lord Tennyson, whose poem "Maud" supplied the title for this photograph.
The free-flowing hair and ethereal faces of these four sisters are reflective of the ideal of beauty established by the painters known as the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, with whom Cameron was closely connected.
