In a reversal of custom, Bracquemond’s drawing of Le Vieux Coq is not a study for the etching, but a copy made of it.
The drawing was made to be reproduced in the catalogue for the 1882 Paris Salon to illustrate the etching. At that time, photographic reproductions were not sensitive enough to capture the nuances of finished paintings or prints, requiring a line drawing such as this, made for that specific purpose.
