Color PaletteAt first glance, Mutter’s photograph seems to be a traditional glimpse of a forest interior, but the trees sprout from a parquet floor. [new para] Employing a process known as photomontage, Mutter shot two negatives on the campus of the University of Illinois, sandwiched them together in the darkroom, masked out what was not useful to him, and crafted this unreal, but rational, composite. [new para] The art of photomontage is as old as photography, but Mutter’s interest developed from his study of Chinese calligraphy, in which one character representing an object is combined with a second object sign to form a third that stands for a more complex concept.
