The Flemish painter Anthony van Dyck was one of the most successful portraitists of the 17th century. This painting is probably a copy after an original self-portrait of the artist. It may have been painted in England, where Van Dyck served as portraitist to the court of King Charles I. The graceful pose presents the artist as a gentleman, on a par with his aristocratic patrons.
