This painting depicts a scene from the life of St. Philip Benizzi, the principal saint of the Servites, a monastic order founded in 1240 by seven wealthy Florentine city councilors. In this work, St. Philip and two companions are interrupted as they ascend Monte Senario, the mountain near Florence that was home to their community. Three dissolute young men, after pursuing the saint and mocking his piety, have been struck by lightning.
Pier Francesco Foschi was a follower of Andrea del Sarto, a leading artist of the Florentine High Renaissance.
