The Clowes Collection
European Painting and Sculpture Before 1800
Major and Mrs. Bono, Venice, Italy; {1} (Arturo Grassi, Florence, Italy, and New York, New York); {2} Dr. George Henry Alexander Clowes [1877-1958], Indianapolis, Indiana, about 1937; Clowes Fund Collection, Indianapolis, 1958--present; on long-term loan to the Indianapolis Museum of Art, Courtesy of the Clowes Fund, since 1971 (C10074); given to the Indianapolis Museum of Art in 2016. {1} On several occasions Dr. Clowes relayed the provenance of this painting to others as: “found…in the attic of an Italian naval officer in Venice, whose wife was a direct descendant of the old man [depicted].” {2} See letter from Arturo Grass to Dr. Clowes, dated 9 April 1950, noting that he was uncertain whether the painting had been published anywhere since its acquisition by Dr. Clowes from Grassi years earlier.
