Celmins frequently reiterates the same subject matter many times in order to keep her own sensibilities sharp, as we see here in two prints depicting the ocean’s surface in different media. One of her favorite themes, the vast ocean surface stretches out into the distance, but draws the viewer close in to examine the carefully crafted lines that create her compositions.
An interest in surfaces is present in many works by Vija Celmins. Although she may derive her subject matter from nature, like the sea or the sky, in the process of building up an image an entirely new world is created, one that encourages us to ponder the infinite.
