A scholar has written about this painting that
"…when standing in front of this work, a viewer is dwarfed by Hongren's impressive landscape.
Dated only one year prior to Hongren's death in 1663, his gigantic scroll…can be heralded as one of the artist's best works; his swansong… It is majestic, imposing, and awesome."
