秋樹豆藤
The desolate sense of Tang’s verse contrasts sharply with the light, lovely image of autumn leaves and a pea vine: 燈火連床滝夜雨, 野人籬落有秋風
Lamplight frames my bed while the night rain cascades, The autumn wind blows on the rustic man’s tumbledown fence.
Yet Tang is responding to a Tang dynasty poem by Li Ying (active about 850) that describes a bucolic scene of lotuses in an autumn pond and garlands of pea flowers on a rustic, dilapidated fence.
Through the medium of ink Tang achieved a wonderful combination of elegant image and lyrical sentiment expressed in fine calligraphy.
