There are many literary records and paintings of this supposed gathering around 1100 of fifteen famous literary men and artists, though modern scholarship has not found evidence for it as an historical event. Nevertheless, it was a popular subject for later artists primarily because the reputations of the people involved were so revered by later generations.
The inscription in the lower left is supposedly by Qiu Ying, an artist active around 1500 who was famous for his ability to copy old paintings and styles. However, the style of this painting is not similar to Qiu's style and suggests the painting was made several generations later.
