During the Yuan dynasty religious Daoism (Taoism) made great advances upon Buddhism, sometimes copying and incorporating whole sutras into their own body of literature by merely changing the Buddhist names to Daoist counterparts.
In these paintings, pairs of the Eight Immortals, rendered in great detail, stand in a shallow setting. Elements, such as the overhanging motifs, light ink wash around the figures for highlight, and delightful dense patterns, reveal that both religious and secular painting shared and profited from each other.
