Mark DescriptionPierre Balmain/ Paris Couture # 63742
Accession NumberMr. and Mrs. William B. Ansted Jr. Art Fund
Copyright(Beverley Birks, New York, New York); purchased by the Indianapolis Museum of Art in 2004.
This ball gown is exquisitely hand-embroidered in a custom Islamic-inspired floral motif with meandering vines, most likely designed by the renowned French embroidery artist Lesage. The dense embroidery of the bodice and upper part of the skirt are offset by trailing embroidery that draws the eye down. The gown is an excellent example of the kind of refined work for which Balmain was famous and attributed to his success as the preferred couturier of European royalty.
