Probably New York art market by 1946.{1} George Henry Alexander Clowes [1877-1958], Indianapolis, Indiana, by at least 1959;{2} Clowes Fund Collection, Indianapolis, since 1958; on long-term loan to the Indianapolis Museum of Art, Courtesy of the Clowes Fund, since 1971 (C10040); given to the Indianapolis Museum of Art in 2014. {1} Based on expertise of this painting made by Klaus G. Perls, Walter Friedländer, and Joseph Pijoan, all made in New York and dated in the period 1946 to 1948, the painting was likely in New York by 1946; see IMA Clowes archives (C10040). A new cradle obscures any identification, exhibition or other revealing marks once possibly present on the back of the panel or frame. {2} The painting was included in the exhibition Paintings from the Collection of George Henry Alexander Clowes: A Memorial Exhibition, John Herron Art Museum, Indianapolis, Indiana (now the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields) 3 October to 1 November 1959, catalogue no. 25 (illustration).
