These panels once formed part of the banco, or lowermost register, of an immense retablo, or altarpiece. Such retablos, typical of late medieval Spain, were often large enough to fill the entire altar wall of a church or chapel. The banco of this altarpiece, which originally numbered at least ten panels, was detached at an unknown date, cut apart, and dispersed.
