This suite is composed of eleven painted wall sculptures. The panels are based on Ellsworth Kelly's lithographs exploring the relationships between shapes and colors. The translation of the shapes and colors from the lithographs into aluminum wall panels was a meticulous process that required mechanical precision to prevent these shapes from warping, as well as special surface preparation to make the colors match.
Kelly produced the series at the Gemini G.E.L. workshop, a screenprinting and sculpture facility in Los Angeles that has hosted many other artists including Robert Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein, and Andy Warhol.
Kelly works with the basic visual experience of color, shape, and scale. In so doing, he attempts to free his shapes from any context other than the space surrounding them. Kelly designed the layout of works in this gallery specifically for the reopening of the IMA contemporary galleries in November, 2005. This is the first time that all eleven panels have appeared on view at the Museum.
Ellsworth Kelly works with the basics of everyday visual experience: color, shape, and scale. He isolates his unique forms, silhouetting them against the wall to integrate his art with the surrounding architecture—one of his key artistic goals.
