The painting depicts various phases of pottery production. Men, women, and children in the roles of laborers, artisans, and overseers work in idyllic harmony. Vignettes like the small girl carrying a child “piggy-back” and a bawling child being scolded for breaking some wares add human touches.
The artist, Minzan, and the locale depicted remain unknown. The painting is invaluable in terms of artistic depiction and as a historical document of ceramic production, and it will be fortunate if the artist and site are someday identified.
