L: 62 in.
Accession NumberGift of Bonnie Birnbaum
CopyrightBonnie Birnbaum wore this dress on her wedding day, November 14, 1946, in New York.
Several important features make this dress an unusual example. With its pointed waistline, the bodice is a revival of styles from two different periods. Its front hook and eye closures are trimmed with eight decorative buttons. The buttons are laced up to create a "faux" corset effect, which is a revival of styles from the 1780s. However, the puff sleeves are reminiscent of the 1890s styles.
This dress is an early creation by Norman Norell and the only known example of this particular design.
