Since ancient times, circular tents or yurts, have served as mobile dwellings for the nomadic herders of Central Asia. Tent bands are interlaced between the struts of the tent to hold it together. White-ground bands similiar to this one were apparently used to decorate felt wedding tents.
Some Turkmen groups placed the band so that the design would be visible from the inside, while others preferred to display it on the exterior.
