While Dürer devoted most of his woodblock prints to widely circulated book illustrations, The Men’s Bath is an independent subject without text. It shows his skill in depicting male anatomy at different ages and in contrasting poses.
The four foreground figures are identifiable as Dürer on the left and three of his friends, each holding an emblem of one of the four temperaments that affected human nature. Dürer, with a rooster, represents melancholy, the artistic temperament.
