In this canvas Lucien Pissarro, eldest son of artist Camille Pissarro, depicted his brother working in the family studio. From Camille’s hat hanging on the wall to the ceramic tiles he made for the planter on the table, the image is filled with details of the family’s life and work. The meticulous dotted brushwork and heavy use of complementary colors make this painting one of the artist’s most ambitious Neo-Impressionist efforts.
An IMA conservator noticed odd textures in the lower left that did not correspond with what is seen on the surface. An X-ray was taken (shown below), which revealed a substantially different composition in this area. It shows that the table was first placed at a different angle with completely different objects on it.
