Color PalettePortraits created by the simplest outlines were the hallmarks of Matisse’s etchings and drypoints in the 1910s. They mimic his equally spare drawings.
Madame Vignier was the daughter-in-law of an antiquities dealer of Matisse’s acquaintance. However, Matisse actually borrowed the facial features of her daughter, Irène, to create the portrait of the mother.
