With pulsating lines, Marin expresses the energy and modernity of New York, where the artist had settled in 1911. This followed five years in Paris, during which he had taught himself the printmaking process of etching.
Brooklyn Bridge, No. 6, Swaying was one of a set of urban etchings published in 1913 by Alfred Stieglitz, who had been introduced to Marin’s work through watercolors sent by Edward Steichen from Paris for exhibit at 291 in 1909.
