In former times, married women wore this garment only on important social occasions. It was carefully folded over a hip belt to display the bead decoration. This beaded garment enhanced the social status of the owner. When Cameroon gained independence in 1961, regulations were passed requiring women to be fully clothed, so these coverings were no longer used.
