- This composition, with its boldy outlined fruit, intricate silhouette of flowers, and lavishly brushed background, reflects de Haan's interest in the relationship of shapes and colors.
- In spring 1889 Dutch artist Meijer de Haan began an 18-month stay in the French province of Brittany, living in the villages of Pont-Aven and Le Pouldu. With Gauguin as friend and mentor, he abandoned his academic approach in favor of the Pont-Aven School's devotion to bold color and surface pattern.
- Of the approximately 20 works de Haan completed in Brittany, more than half of them are fruit and floral subjects.
