A mass of nautical elements—rigging, netting, pilings, and the titular anchor—reflects Davis’s interest in distorted forms and the ordering of various objects in space.
Davis was only 21 when he exhibited with the Modernists at the Armory Show in 1913. In that decade, he developed an interest in Cubism and began overlaying objects under the influence of Cubist collages.
