Brushes, palettes, books, and other tools of a watercolorist rest on an old wooden desk. Small watercolors line the interior partitions of this artist’s studio, each meticulously depicting various animal, insect, and plant life. The species illustrated here are invasive ones, those introduced intentionally or accidentally to non-native habitats causing damage to pre-existing ecosystems. On reverse of the partitions are chalkboards listing species now extinct, such as the dodo and the passenger pigeon. Some factors for the untimely vanishing of these different species include human activity, climate change, and environmental strain caused by invasive species.
Through his art, Mark Dion examines the wide-ranging methods we use to identify and understand the natural world. His deep concern for the environment, as seen in
Harbingers of the Fifth Season, resonates with the Museum’s sustained commitment to nature, evidenced by our expansive grounds and The Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park: 100 Acres.Exhibition Name
