- This 1902 publication is the product of 14 years spent by the artist scoping out views of the Eiffel Tower from many vantage points—from atop the tower, from close range, and from locations in and around Paris. The overall concept of the work and the compositional devices and motifs it employs are heavily indebted to the stylistic inventiveness of Japanese woodblock prints.
- Henri Rivière was particularly inspired by Hokusai’s Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, an album devoted to Japan’s sacred and highest mountain seen from near and far (see example at right). Like Hokusai, Rivière captured atmospheric effects like wind, rain, snow, and cloud-cover, while focusing on foreground scenes of daily life.
